The Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary boasts a picturesque setting, nestled between the Mahananda and Teesta Rivers and creating an incredible natural scene that charms visitors from the moment they arrive. Exuding an aura of unspoiled beauty, this sanctuary is home to over 300 species of avian fauna ranging from majestic peacocks and racket-tail drongos to agile flycatchers and melodious racket-tail drongos - not forgetting an impressive collection of 300 plant species such as Sal, Shisu Teak Bamboo Jarul Fern Orchid to name just a few!
Wildlife encounters and spectacular watch towers
Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary offers visitors an unforgettable travel experience where nature and wildlife come alive in all their raw splendour. As an Elephant Migration Zone, around 150 elephants travel through its verdant expanse - creating a sight that stays with visitors forever! In addition to elephants, Sambar, Rhesus Monkeys, Mountain Goats (Serow) and Himalayan black bears reside here as well as Royal Bengal Tigers and Indian Bison (Gaur). These wild attractions add charm and mystery to their presence!
As part of their effort to enhance visitors' experiences, several watchtowers can be found throughout the sanctuary, strategically placed at breathtaking spots. From these vantage points visitors can appreciate its natural beauty while birdwatching or experiencing wildlife in its habitat - with one tower standing out from Laltong on Teesta River's bed providing an unforgettable view of this amazing experience.
