Celebrations galore in the city

The Panmana Pooram is one of the most auspicious festivals that attracts thousands of travellers voyaging through the T.S. Canal every year. The festival is marked with a procession of around 50 elephants and is a majestic sight in itself. Paripally Kodimoottil Gajamela is the “Festival of elephants”, and is a grand spectacle of a convoy of elephants decorated with silk parasols (muthukuda), swaying white tufts (venchamaram) and peacock feather fans (aalavattom). Malanada Kettukazhcha is dedicated to Duryodhana, the antagonist in the epic “Mahabharata” and draws huge crowds who come to witness the 70 to 80 ft tall decorated structures.

Kollam Pooram marks the end of the 10 day-festival of the Asramam Shree Krishna Swamy Temple on the occasion of Vishu, where thousands of enthusiasts flock the field with their elephants decorated in vibrant colours. Kottamkulangara Chamaya Vilakku is a unique festival in which thousands of men dress up as beautiful ladies, to seek the blessings of the Goddess Bhagavathy.
