Among the country's premier zoos

What sets Nandankanan apart from others is its unique setting within a lush forest, where animals thrive in a completely natural environment. Unlike traditional zoos, this sanctuary presents enclosures adorned with vibrant greenery, creating an authentic forest-like ambiance. Here, the wildlife resides without any fear or concern of becoming prey to hunters.

Meet the white tigers

One fascinating aspect of Nandankanan is its specialization in housing white tigers, which were born to normally coloured parents in 1980. This distinction makes the park a haven for these majestic creatures. Additionally, Nandankanan is proud to encompass the splendid Kanjia Lake, recognized as a wetland of national importance. The significance of this natural feature further enhances the park's appeal.

A zoo with accolades

Notably, Nandankanan holds the distinction of being the first zoo in India to become a member of the World Association of Zoos & Aquariums (WAZA). This prestigious recognition showcases the park's commitment to international standards of animal care and conservation. Furthermore, it is a testament to the exceptional efforts made by Nandankanan in protecting and preserving wildlife.

Adding to its prestige, Nandankanan has the distinct honour of being the only zoo in India after which an express train, the Nandankanan Express, has been named by the Indian Railways. This recognition reflects the zoo's significant contribution to the cultural and natural heritage of the region.
