A window to the Himalayas
Pelling is a scenic town located at an elevation of 6800 feet, affording stunning views of the Himalayan mountain ranges and the majestic Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. Pelling was once a dense forest that harboured many wild animals, including the mysterious Wildman (maybe not a yeti, though). It later evolved into a village between two ancient Buddhist monasteries, Pemayangtse and Sangacholing. Today, Pelling is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Sikkim, as it provides convenient access to many nearby attractions and activities.
A dream come true
One of the most splendid attractions near Pelling is the Kanchenjunga Falls, a waterfall that plunges from a height of about 100 feet, surrounded by lush greenery and dramatic landscapes. The falls are named after the Kanchenjunga Mountain, which towers over the horizon. The falls create a magnificent scene that resembles something out of a dream, with the water splashing down from multiple tiers and creating a soothing symphony of sound. The site is an ideal spot for nature lovers, photographers, and picnic enthusiasts.
A fallen capital with a breathtaking view
Rabdentse was the second capital of the former kingdom of Sikkim, after Yuksom. It was the seat of power of the Sikkimese monarchs from 1670 to 1814, until it was razed by the invading Gurkhas. Today, the ruins of Rabdentse lie hidden from the main road, at a walking distance from the Pemayangtse Monastery. The ruins are situated on a hilltop, overlooking the valley and the Khangchendzonga range. The view from the top of the ruins is something to be treasured and remembered, as it offers a glimpse of the glorious past and the splendid present of Sikkim.
A sacred sanctuary of peace and wisdom
Pemayangtse Monastery is one of the oldest and most respected monasteries of Sikkim. It was established by Lhatsun Chempo, one of the lamas who performed the consecration ceremony of the first Chogyal (king) of Sikkim. The monastery belongs to the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism and has been entrusted with the task of performing all religious functions of the former royal family. It is a sacred sanctuary of peace and wisdom, housing many ancient scriptures, statues, and paintings. The most remarkable feature of the monastery is the wooden structure of Zangdokpalri, the heavenly abode of Guru Padmasambhava, which is intricately carved and painted by a single monk over a period of five years.
The western part of Sikkim, where Pelling is situated, is a land of diverse beauty and culture, where you can experience the best of nature and heritage. It is a place where you can find adventure, spirituality, or relaxation, depending on your mood and preference. It is a place where you can witness the wonders of the Himalayas and the richness of Buddhism.
