Unknown treasures, desert wonders, and mysteries

At the heart of Thar Desert lies Jaisalmer Fort: an impressive structure boasting sparkling sandstone walls which harmoniously blend in with its desert landscape. Within striking distance of Jaisalmer lies Kuldhara, an eerily beautiful yet mysterious village where nearly one thousand residents mysteriously vanished overnight and the village has since been abandoned for generations. Akal Wood Fossil Park spans 21 hectares and provides a window into the past by preserving fossilised tree trunks from an ancient forest that existed some 180 million years ago when land became submerged beneath sea levels. At the nearby India-Pakistan border, Tanot Mata Temple became nationally renowned during both wars of 1965 and 1971 for withstanding heavy shelling without suffering even one bomb explosion nearby. Nathmal Ki Haveli stands as an exquisite testament to the craftsmanship of two architect brothers who, working from opposite ends, created two similar yet asymmetrical halves of this intricate building. Within this breathtaking landscape is the Desert National Park, home of an endangered Great Indian Bustard population; with less than 100 remaining in the wild today and 70 being located within and around its boundaries.

An abundance of festivities and traditions

Jaisalmer boasts an eclectic calendar of festivals throughout the year. Jaisalmer hosts its signature Desert Festival hosted by the Department of Tourism annually during January and February; this three-day extravaganza fills Jaisalmer with colour and cultural splendour for three unforgettable days. This vibrant celebration on the sand dunes near Jaisalmer features an extraordinary lineup of Rajasthani folk culture, including Kathputli shows, camel races, camel polo matches, traditional processions, camel-mounted bands, folk music performances and dance. Additionally, Jaisalmer hosts the famed Gangaur Festival, an 18-day celebration honouring Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati that draws enthusiastic worshipers - especially women - each year. Additionally, during August and September the Ramdevra Fair at Pokhran draws thousands who sing nightlong devotional songs as an offering to Baba Ramdevji himself. These festivals illuminate Jaisalmer's cultural treasures and vibrant heritage.

Handcrafted souvenirs, ethnic clothing and artisanal treats

Jaisalmer offers an eclectic variety of crafts and souvenirs not to be missed, including colourful embroidery with colourful applique and mirror work and traditional prints such as batik, tie & dye and block printing. Come experience its rich culture through embroidered textiles with colourful applique and mirror work and take part in making batik prints, tie & dye, tie dye prints or block prints. Ghagras, sarees, dupattas, kurtas, skirts and scarves make up the wide range of ethnic wear worn across India. Additionally, immerse yourself in local jewellery cultures by shopping the bustling bazaars full of exquisite silver, gold and gemstone pieces. Make sure to explore Jaisalmer's impressive leather crafts scene as well, where stunning traditional 'juttis' (traditional sandals with intricately embroidered patterns) along with other leather products like satchels, pouches, phone cases and more can be easily found in its markets. Your visit would not be complete without these amazing souvenirs from Jaisalmer.
