A gateway to avian splendour

On the border of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi lies Okhla Bird Sanctuary - an esteemed nature reserve in Gautam Buddha Nagar. Covering four square kilometres, this bird sanctuary serves as home for over 300 species of birds - many migrating during winter season - as well as aquatic fauna, reptiles, quadrupeds, reptiles and quadrupeds. With its ideal setting consisting of thorn scrub, grassland, marshland environments which attract various avian species, making this Important Bird Area (IBA) one of 466 designated across India.

The Okhla Bird Sanctuary boasts an enticing history that only adds to its allure. Named for the village of Okhla on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, its founding is tied closely with local folklore as its roots trace back to Sheikh Musa (also known as Sheikh Okhla) whose legacy continues on today in local folklore lore. Such connections add an air of mystique that leaves visitors spellbound by what they find there!

Over time, Okhla Bird Sanctuary has seen various developments and challenges. In 2017, plans were announced to introduce a cycling track into the sanctuary to promote ecotourism and allow visitors to experience it on two wheels. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 pandemic authorities had to temporarily close it due to bird species and wildlife within its borders being at risk.
