Unravelling nature's mystique on the banks of Ganga

In the eastern embrace of the mighty river Ganga lies the enchanting Chilla Range—a sprawling forest covering 249 sq. km of untouched wilderness. Established as a protected forest in 1977, it later merged with Motichur Range to form the famed Rajaji National Park. Embraced by the serene city of Haridwar, this range beckons nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts alike to immerse themselves in the heart of the jungle and witness the mesmerising wildlife that calls it home.

A wildlife haven with eco-friendly safaris

The Chilla Range boasts eco-friendly safari opportunities that allow you to explore the vibrant flora and fauna in an environmentally conscious manner. From bus safaris to thrilling jeep rides and even majestic elephant rides, the range offers multiple ways to experience its wonders. For those seeking to delve deeper into the forest's soul, the safari takes you on a mesmerising 2 and 1/2 hour circuit through Mundal, Mithawali, and Khara, revealing a unique landscape teeming with life.

Rest house of old-world charm

Amidst this wild expanse stands the Chilla Forest Rest House—a double-storey British-style bungalow dating back to 1883. Elegantly perched on the main tourism zone's edge, this rest house offers a serene stay amidst nature's embrace. With two suites on the ground floor and another on the top floor, the rest house exudes an old-world charm that transports you back to a bygone era. Operated by the Eco-development committee in Haridwar, this historical retreat is a treasure trove of memories waiting to be discovered.

A tapestry of incredible stories

Between the sacred cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh, the Chilla Range is a haven for wildlife, offering sanctuary to leopards, spotted deers, sambar, Indian hare, Nilgai, wild boar, barking deer, and majestic elephants. For birdwatching enthusiasts, the region presents a captivating array of Himalayan birds and water birds that frequent the riverine realm.

Ganga Chaur Machan, a wooden platform atop a towering tree behind the Chilla FRH, provides a mesmerising vantage point to observe the forest's wildlife and avian wonders. It is no wonder that this spot has become a favoured destination for wildlife researchers and passionate birdwatchers alike.

In a touching tribute to 'Arundhati,' a beloved camp elephant who served the forest department for 27 years, a Ficus tree was planted near the FRH in her memory. This gentle giant was adored by tourists and forest officials alike, leaving a heartwarming legacy in the hearts of all who encountered her.
