A wildlife haven in South India

Situated at the junction of the Eastern and Western Ghats, approximately 88 kilometres away from Coimbatore, the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve is a vast expanse of 1,400 square kilometres. The sanctuary additionally accommodates a diverse range of fauna, including several tigers, elephants, leopards, sloths, and various avian species.

While being acclaimed for its impressive tiger population, the reserve is also providing home to a diverse range of animals such as elephants, gaur, black buck, four-horned antelope, leopards, hyenas, and wild dogs. The topography of the reserve includes forests, thorn forests, and tropical hill forests. The protected area encompasses two discrete segments, the Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary and the B.R. Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka. Sandalwood thrive in the midst of this breathtaking landscape. Officially designated as a tiger reserve in the year 2013, the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve draws nature enthusiasts and and wildlife enthusiasts who come to discover its abundant treasures.

A historic legacy

The Sathyamangalam forest region is referenced in ancient Tamil literature that dates back to the Sangam Era The region was later under the dominion of Tipu Sultan in the 17th century. Tipu strategically implemented two important pathways that cut across the Sathamangalam forests. Today, the Sathyamangalam-Dhimbam ghat road, has a series of 27 hairpin bends and, is a preferred route for individuals desiring to discover the lush expanses of this region. Tipu Sultan had bestowed upon sandalwood the esteemed designation of a royal tree, and sandalwood still has majestic associations, with sandal products being associated with high quality and luxury.
