A feathered tapestry
As dawn breaks and the sun makes its mark upon Okhla Bird Sanctuary, its 302 resident avians create an array of colours in the sky with their vibrant plumage. The sanctuary plays an invaluable conservation role by hosting over 320 bird species annually - featuring 50 resident species as well as over one lakh migrating birds during winter - which total over 30% of those found across the Indian subcontinent! December, January and February provide ideal birdwatching conditions.
A haven for all seasons
As winter draws near, Okhla Sanctuary becomes a haven for avian travellers seeking refuge from colder climes. Summer brings a different cast of characters - with southern birds making the journey. Each day of the year brings something new for bird enthusiasts, making Okhla a year-round sanctuary. So far, the sanctuary has welcomed over 10,000 migrating birds including 40 aquatic migratory species, 6 terrestrial ones and several predators such as Eurasian Hobby, Peregrine Falcon and Greater Spotted Eagle among others.
The Okhla Bird Sanctuary is not only an idyllic sanctuary for birds but also offers stunning visuals between water and land. Thanks to the damming of Yamuna River, an idyllic lake has formed and offers visitors the chance to watch an array of northern shovelers, spot-billed ducks, brown-headed gulls, and other waterfowl perform their spectacular feathered dances for us to marvel at!
