Embracing nature's symphony

At 4 square kilometres in size, the Okhla Bird Sanctuary beckons nature enthusiasts and wildlife fans alike as a haven of tranquillity along the Yamuna River. Home to over 300 bird species--including rare migratory ones that migrate here--this sanctuary boasts tranquil waters filled with vibrant species. Drawing visitors for leisurely picnics, peaceful boating trips and immersive nature walks is its call - offering visitors unforgettable encounters that complement nature perfectly!

A feathered tapestry

As dawn breaks and the sun makes its mark upon Okhla Bird Sanctuary, its 302 resident avians create an array of colours in the sky with their vibrant plumage. The sanctuary plays an invaluable conservation role by hosting over 320 bird species annually - featuring 50 resident species as well as over one lakh migrating birds during winter - which total over 30% of those found across the Indian subcontinent! December, January and February provide ideal birdwatching conditions.

A haven for all seasons

As winter draws near, Okhla Sanctuary becomes a haven for avian travellers seeking refuge from colder climes. Summer brings a different cast of characters - with southern birds making the journey. Each day of the year brings something new for bird enthusiasts, making Okhla a year-round sanctuary. So far, the sanctuary has welcomed over 10,000 migrating birds including 40 aquatic migratory species, 6 terrestrial ones and several predators such as Eurasian Hobby, Peregrine Falcon and Greater Spotted Eagle among others.

The Okhla Bird Sanctuary is not only an idyllic sanctuary for birds but also offers stunning visuals between water and land. Thanks to the damming of Yamuna River, an idyllic lake has formed and offers visitors the chance to watch an array of northern shovelers, spot-billed ducks, brown-headed gulls, and other waterfowl perform their spectacular feathered dances for us to marvel at!

Narratives carved in time

Time has written amazing tales into Okhla Bird Sanctuary's fabric. Since 1874 when Agra Canal construction started, birdwatchers have been drawn to its scenic vistas and serene lakes. With the opening of Okhla Barrage in 1986 came a tranquil lake that further enhanced this oasis for birding enthusiasts. However unfortunately, its idyllic refuge still faces challenges that test its resilience: pollution and urban development cast shadows over its sanctuary status yet remain undaunted in their commitment to conservation efforts.

The Okhla Bird Sanctuary boasts an impressive list of birds, such as two critically endangered species (white-rumped vulture and Indian vulture), nine vulnerable, and seven near-threatened ones, such as ferruginous pochard, black-bellied tern and grey-headed fish eagle, which migrate erratically across India. Furthermore, during the Asian Water Bird Census in January 2011, an unusual leucistic coot (known for its bright white plumage) was spotted amongst a flock of common coots for the first time anywhere in India!

A journey beyond words

Okhla Bird Sanctuary's captivating sights go far beyond its avian wonders; instead, it provides a sublime collection of experiences to enrich your journey. At its centre is Yamuna River's confluence; providing breathtaking panoramic views that connect you with nature. Only 2 kilometres away lies Gautam Buddha Park, providing visitors with verdant respite as they connect with its rhythms of nature. Towards its far end lies Stupa 18 Gallery which showcases contemporary Indian artists - adding cultural value to your visit to its wonders!

At the core of Okhla Bird Sanctuary is a story of coexistence: of winged beings crossing continents and of urban aspirations balanced with ecological preservation. More than just a destination, the Okhla Bird Sanctuary invites its visitors to immerse themselves in nature's breathtaking marvels.
