Painkuni Festival is celebrated annually in Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple, in Thiruvananthapuram. The main ritual of this festival is the hoisting of a ceremonial flag, called kodiyettu. After this, gigantic fibre-glass figures of Pandavas are placed at the eastern entrance of the temple. This is done to win the favour of Lord Indra, who is believed to be the god of rain.

During the ten-day-long event, special rituals are performed every day, and the festival ends with a procession to immerse the idol in the sea. Members of the Travancore royal family also escort the deity for immersion.
