An important festival of Jains, Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Mahavira, the 24th tirthankara of the faith. People observe this day with prayer and fasting, especially in the state of Bihar, where Lord Mahavira is said to have been born. The Parasnatha Temple of Kolkata also holds a spectacular celebration.
