The Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is surrounded by the majestic Mahananda River and the Teesta River, offering a stunning natural backdrop for visitors.
An unforgettable tourist experience, the forest plays a pivotal role as an Elephant Migration Zone, where around 150 Elephants migrate between West Bengal, Nepal, and Assam in the winter and rainy seasons.
It also serves as a home of other many animals like Sambar, Rhesus Monkey, Mountain Goats (Serow), and Himalayan black bears and most importantly, the Great Bengal Tiger and Indian Bison (Gaur).
The Sanctuary boasts an impressive collection of over 300 species of plants & 300 avian species. Some are the most common flora species are Sal, Shisu, Teak, Bamboo, Jarul, Fern Orchid, etc. Some of the popular bird species are majestic Peacocks, nimble Fly Catchers, graceful Egrets, and the melodious Racket-Tail Drongo.
Several watch towers have been established in the sanctuary at breathtaking places for the tourists to enjoy its natural beauty at its best, bird watch and more. One such tower is at Laltong on the bed of Teesta river.
The sanctuary is also home to several forest villages, including Sukna, Gulma, Kalijhora, Latpanchoor, Punding,Toribari, Sevoke, Mile, and latlong.
Many areas in the sanctuary are equipped with artificial salt licks which provide a mineral replenishing spot for the animals. These also serve as good photo spots for them!
According to many legends, the forest is said to be the dwelling place of the legendary Himalayan Yeti.
The sanctuary is also home to some endangered bird species, including the Oriental Pied Hornbill, Rufus-naked Hornbill, and the Great Hornbill.
November to April is the best time to visit Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. This is when the sky remains clearand temperature mild to cold.
