The forested city of Shivpuri reverberates with royal reminiscences. Most famous for the Madhav National Park, it was once the summer capital of the rulers of Gwalior. The city draws its name from Lord Shiva, who is said to have visited this land. The major attractions here are a British-style hunting lodge, marble chhatris dedicated to Gwalior kings and beautiful palaces.

The Madhav National Park covers an area of about 355 sq km and houses the beautiful George Castle, which was built by Jivaji Rao Scindia of the Gwalior royal family to provide an overnight stay to British king George V during his tiger hunting expedition. But allegedly, king George never came here. Nearby is the man-made Sakhya Sagar Lake, which is home to several species of reptiles and birds. It lies at a distance of 116 km from Gwalior.
