This hillock is a popular picnic spot and its proximity to Khurda Fort and many other tourist hotspots has made it a popular stopover for sightseeing. Barunei Hill is also home to a shrine dedicated to Goddess Barunei. Legend has it that king Ramachandra Dev had built the temple for the goddess. A stream called Swarna Ganga flows down the hill and its water is said to have many medicinal properties. Tourists often come here to bathe in its curative water. The hill also makes for a nice trekking spot and local lore says the Pandavas had stayed in the caves in these hills. Other attractions nearby include the hot spring of Atri, Nikunja Bihari and Radhakanta Deb temples, Sufi shrine Kaipadadar etc.
