Gokak Falls

Popularly known as the Niagara of India, Gokak Falls is one of the prettiest in the country. It sources its water from the Ghataprabha river, which takes a leap of 170 ft over a horseshoe-shaped sandstone cliff after a long winding course. The cliff is nestled in a picturesque gorge of the Gokak Valley. A prime attraction of the Gokak Falls is the hanging 200-m-long bridge that lies 14 m above the bedrock. The Gokak Falls also holds immense historical significance as it was here that electricity was first generated in India, in 1887. The generating station can be reached through a ropeway, which makes for a truly thrilling experience. Tourists can also visits monuments from the Chalukyan era situated on both sides of the rocky gorge. These include temples of Durga, Shanmukha and Mahalingeshwara built in the traditional Chalukyan style of architecture. Lying at a distance of about 60 km from Belgaum, the falls is known for its beauty, speed and shape. June to September is the best time to visit here as the waterfalls is at its scenic best.

Godachinamalki Falls

Also known as Markandeya Falls, the Godachinamalki Falls is nestled in a deep green valley formed by the pristine Markandeya river. Reaching the waterfalls is an adventure in itself as one needs to start a short trek from Godachinmalki village and pass through an irregular forest route to make it to the majestic waterfalls. River Markandeya first falls from a height of 25 m and then flows into a rocky valley and falls for the second time from a height of about 20 m. Tourists can also visit two dams located near the waterfalls. The Hidkal Dam is built across the Ghataprabha river while the Shirur Dam is built across the Markandeya river. The waterfalls is located at a distance of 69 km from Belgaum and makes for a truly blissful experience.

The prime attraction here is Dhupadal Dam, which has a beautiful park noted for its colourful fountains. Vajrapoha Falls

Falling from a height of 200 ft, the majestic Vajrapoha Falls is one of the most beautiful in Karnataka. A haven for nature lovers, trekkers and adventure enthusiasts, the Vajrapoha Falls is surrounded by the enchanting hills of the Jamboti forests. Reaching the falls makes for a thrilling experience as one has to travel from Jamboti up to a point beyond Chapoli and then cross the Mahadayi river twice. After this, one gets to an elevated flat hillock from where the gorgeous drop of water can be witnessed in all its glory. A visit to the Vajrapoha Falls makes for a truly refreshing experience and must not be missed during a trip to Belgaum.

The best time to visit the waterfalls is during the monsoon season when the place is at its scenic best.
