Ananthapura Lake Temple

The strikingly beautiful 9th century Ananthapura Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is situated in the middle of a lake. This is the only lake temple in Kerala and is considered to be the original abode of Lord Ananthapadmanabha. Devotees need to cross a bridge to reach the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. The lake temple offers amazing views of the surrounding hillocks and swaying palm and coconut trees. The gorgeous temple is also noted for being home to a 150-year-old crocodile, who is called Babia/ Babiya, and is considered to be the guardian of the temple. Visitors to the temple make sure to get a glimpse of the crocodile. The Ananthapura Lake Temple is located at a distance of 30 km from Bekal and the drive to the temple proves to be an equally beautiful and fascinating experience.

Ullal

The quaint town of Ullal is popular for its religious riches. The main attraction is the Somanatheshwara Temple, situated by the Arabian Sea. Constructed under the reign of Abbakka Devi, first Tuluva queen of Ullal, in the 16th century, it attracts visitors for its unique South Indian architecture and peaceful surroundings. Another attraction is the Sayyed Madani Dargah that houses the tomb of sufi saint Sayyed Madani, who had come to Ullal from Madina over 400 years ago and helped the poor attain spirituality. The dargah is visited by pilgrims in droves during the Urs festival, which is celebrated once every five years with great fervour. Tourists can also head to the Saint Sebastian Church that dates back to 1926. It is one of the most popular churches around Mangalore and attracts visitors with its splendid architecture. Other important spots in Ullal include the Ullal Jama Masjid, which was raised in the memory of saint Sayyed Mohammed Shareeful Madani.

Malik Deenar Mosque

Constructed in conventional Kerala style of architecture, the historic Malik Deenar Mosque is said to have been founded by Malik Ibn Deenar, believed to be one of the first Muslims to have come to India. The stunning structure, annually, plays host to a grand celebration to commemorate Deenar's and his first group of traders' arrival in India. Legend has it that Deenar and his 12 associates landed in India over 1,500 years ago, bringing the religion with them. The Malik Deenar Mosque was thus, constructed in 642 AD under the rule of Cheraman Perumal of the Western Ganga dynasty. The structure features intricate Arabic carvings on wooden beams and pillars, which are noteworthy. The mosque is thronged by crowds particularly during the celebration of the Urs Festival.

Mallikarjuna Temple

Fringed by swaying coconut and palm trees, the beautiful Mallikarjuna Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and draws pilgrims with its splendid architecture and relaxing vibes. The Kumbala river flowing close by, adds to the picturesque beauty of the place. According to legend, the idol of Lord Shiva in the temple was installed by Arjuna, one of the Pandavas from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The temple is also popular for hosting the annual Jathra Mahotsavam during the month of March. One of the major attractions here is the Yakshagana performance, which takes place every evening in the temple premises. Another highlight of the temple are the yearly Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations that invite thousands of pilgrims from all parts of the state. The temple is located at the heart of Kasargod town and can easily be reached from Bekal.
