There are many popular skiing spots in Shimla, the best of which is Kufri that is often called the winter sport capital of the city. Lying a stone’s throw from Shimla, Kufri (2,622 m) is a skier's paradise as it remains blanketed with thick snow from January to March. Tourists can visit Mashobra, on the outskirts of the city, which remains covered in snow from the months of December through March. Narkanda is among the oldest ski resorts in the country and lies about 60 km from Shimla. Its unexplored and unspoilt slopes make for a great skiing stopover. Perched at a height of about 8,100 ft, Narkanda is known for delicious cherries and apples.

The high altitude, scenic beauty and challenging terrain of Shimla make it a paradise for trekkers. Surrounded by seven hills and a multitude of passes connecting them, the city offers scenic trails that will give you an experience of a lifetime. While the Dhauladhar range has more than two dozen passes, the Pirpanjal range boasts around 12 pretty routes. Some of the popular treks you can undertake are: Shimla to Banjar that goes through Luhri, Ani and Jalori Pass; Shimla to Chakrata that winds through Narkanda, Hatu Peak, Halau, Kandol, Koli; from Narkanda, Khadrala, Sungri to Rohru and back to Shimla; Banjar to Bathad, Sarahan, Arsu and then Rampur.

Shimla is a hotspot for golfing as it boasts vast emerald expanses set amidst serene environs. Tourists can had to Naldehra, on the outskirts of the city, which is one of the best golf courses in the country. A nine-hole course, it was laid out by Lord Curzon, the former governor-general of India, who named it after his daughter, Naldera. Visitors can enjoy a good game of golf amidst tall trees and lofty mountains, all the while breathing in the tranquility and peace of the surroundings.

If you love to sail through the sky or scale heights, paragliding is a must-try sport for you. Head to the scenic hill station of Kufri, where paragliding is a buzzing activity. As you fly across, wearing a chute, you can see splendid views of pristine snow and emerald foliage pass by. This experience is truly exhilarating.

Fishing/Angling

The city of Shimla is cut by small shallow streams that host a good catch of fish. One of the best spots is the upstream of Rohru, in the Pabbar Valley. To fish for trout, one can head to the hatchery in Chirgaon. You will find bountiful supplies of brown and rainbow trout. Tourists can also head to Sandsu, Seema, Mandil, Tikri and Dhamvari, which are popular angling spots nearby Rohru.

The picture perfect landscapes of Shimla and its nearby areas provide the ideal setting for camping for tourists. Shimla is home to a number of private camping resorts and stores that provide necessary equipment for setting up your own camps in the hills. Some of the best spots to enjoy camping are Shoghi, Chail's Koti Neen, Mashobra and Basantpur village. Most of the private camping resorts provide excellent facilities for food, lodging and bonfire, depending on your budget. Adventure lovers can trek through the verdant forests surrounding Shimla and set up their own camps.
