Located around 130 km from Indore, Khandwa is an ancient town dotted with beautiful temples, shrines and age-old kunds. A prominent Hindu and Jain spiritual centre, Khandwa also boasts many colonial buildings and monuments. The major attraction is the Director Collectorate Building, which is a fine specimen of English architecture. Tourists can also pay obeisance at the Bhavani Mata Temple, dedicated to Goddess Turja Bhavani, who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. The temple is visited by thousands of devotees every year as it is believed that coming here washes the sins of a person. Another attraction is the Asirgarh Fort, situated in the Satpura range. Also called Asigarh Qila, it was built by Assa Ahir of the Ahir dynasty.
