Salugara is a small town located in the outskirts of Siliguri, and is most famous for its namesake monastery. It was built by Kalu Rimpoche, a Tibetan Lama. The highlight of the monastery is the 100-foot stupa that houses five relics of Buddhism that are highly revered by the members of Buddhist community. Also known as the Great International Tashi Gomang Stupa, it is visited by tourists from across the globe, and is an incredible sight to behold. Salugara Monastery was established by the followers of the Dalai Lama. The perimeter walls feature colourful depictions of a meditating Lord Buddha, and the interiors feature a polished wooden floor, where prayer mats have been placed for devotees. The whole atmosphere is that of utter peace and serenity, allowing serious devotees and the monks who live here to reflect and introspect against the gorgeous backdrop of the Himalayas. You can take a stroll in the landscaped gardens that flank the main building, or just enjoy the view and calm of Salugara.
