The birthplace of Saint Tukaram Maharaj, a Hindu poet, Dehu is around 35 km from Pune. It is located on the banks for River Indrayani. The Dehu Gatha Temple, built in 1723, is a must-visit. On the entrance of the temple, a statue of the Maharaj stands. The walls of the temple display intricate carvings of all the Gathas of Sant Tukaram, and are very easy to read. Evidently, the home where he stayed can still be found in the premises. During the festival of Palakhi, celebrated in the month of Ashadh, Dehu sees an influx of hundreds of devotees. A pretty garden has been dedicated to Sant Tukaram’s wife and a rock commemorating his popular 13-day fast has also been erected.
