Due to its breathtaking and scenic surroundings, Nagercoil is a famous tourist destination in Tamil Nadu. It is sandwiched between the beautiful Arabian Sea and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Western Ghats. Emerald green carpets, verdant hills and the deep blue sea make up the scenic vistas of Nagercoil. The main attraction is Olakaruvi Waterfalls that are nestled in the hills of the Western Ghats. A foam of milky white water cascading amidst picturesque surroundings, the waterfalls are an idyllic spot to enjoy nature and its bounty. Nagercoil is dotted with plantations of cardamom and clove and the spicy aroma permeating the air is a joy to the senses. The town lies at the intersection point of the eastern and western railways.

Not only has Nagercoil served as the food basket of the state of Kerala and has been known as the Granary of Travancore, but it has also been among the top spice trading centres during the rule of Travancore kings after the 14th century. In fact, it had trade relations with Arab merchants during the Pre-Islamic period. Legend has it that the place got its name from Nagaraja Temple (temple of serpent King), which is located in the heart of the city. Thousands of devotees from all over the country visit this temple every year.
