Muharram is observed as New Year’s Day by Muslims. For Shia Muslims, it is a day of mourning as they believe Hussain Ibn Ali, the son of Ali and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was martyred on this day in Karbala in 680 AD. The tenth day of Muharram, known as the Day of Ashura, is the most important as Shias honour the great sacrifice of Hussain on this day.
