One of the largest universities in the state, the Tamil University is an architectural marvel. One of the most noted academic centres in Thanjavur, it was set up with an aim to further the advancement of learning and research in Tamil language, literature and culture. The university houses a museum that is its premier attraction. Exhibits at the 10 galleries of the museum include more than 3,500 objects related to Tamilian culture; most of which are articles of craft and devices from daily life usage such as utensils. There is also a vast display of armoury and weapons. The galleries are divided across categories of: Epigraphy, Archaeology, Numismatics, Sculptures, Arms, Folk Arts, Household Articles, Musical Instruments, Contemporary Art and Agricultural Objects. The library in the premises resembles the Parliament House of New Delhi in its architectural style and is a must-visit.
