The Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve boasts three wildlife sanctuaries, namely, the Haliday Island Wildlife Sanctuary, the Sajnekhali Wild Life Sanctuary and the Lothian Wildlife Sanctuary. Haliday Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Haliday Island, is situated on the Matla river, very close to the Bay of Bengal. One can spot a diverse kind of wildlife here, like spotted deer, wild boar, barking deer and rhesus macaque. Various varieties of birds also haunt this island and one can't miss the endemic invertebrate fauna. The royal Bengal tigers are occasional visitors to this island. One can also find plenty of fish swimming in the Matla river. Spanning over an area of 3.5 sq km, the wildlife sanctuary draws tourists from all across the country.
