If you wish to see something unique in Mizoram, while driving to the villages or towns throughout Mizoram, it is very common to see sheds or small shops on the roadside where vegetables and fruits are kept with signs displaying the price of items, without any shopkeeper in sight! Passersby are trusted to pick up what they need and put the money in a box. If change is required, the buyers are encouraged to help themselves from the same container. The shops work on the principle of trust. Such shops are called “nghah loh dawr” (shop without keeper) and are maybe unique to the culture of Mizoram. This is practised generally as the farmers spend their days working in their lands that are often very far from the roads. Needless to say, this tradition is another example of the community effort to uphold values.
