Deccan Odyssey Luxury is a joint venture between Indian Railway and Govt. of Maharashtra. Project is commissioned in the year 2004-2005.  The objective of running this luxury train was primarily to showcase the tourism assets of Maharashtra like pristine beauty of Konkan coast, the art, the culture, the heritage of Maharashtra (including world heritage sites of Ajanta & Ellora), as well as Maharashtra’s local arts, crafts and cuisine.

Considering the investment made in the project and to achieve bare minimum goals of running the train in Maharashtra,  MTDC has outsourced the operation to the private tour operator from season 2014-15 with precondition of 40% destination hours in Maharashtra out of total destination hours in season.
