Named after Raja Joginder Sen, a princely head of a state, this beautiful hill station is where the 163-km-long Kangra valley narrow gauge rail track ends. The rail line was laid in the early part of the 20th century to construct one of the country’s first hydro-electric projects. At Barot, on River Uhl, is the reservoir that feeds the turbines of the hydroelectric plant. At a distance of 55 km from Mandi, Jogindernagar also has many adventure sports activities like mountain biking, camping and trekking to indulge in. Close by is Bir-Billing, a paragliding site considered among the best in the world. The Jogindernagar herbal garden is a nature lovers delight.
Nestled in a laid back but very scenic valley, Barot is famous for gaming trout fish. The snow-fed River Uhl is well stocked with the exotic fish by a breeding center at Barot. Ample opportunities for trekking and camping exist in the valley. The place can be reached by road only and is 40 km from Jogindernagar.
Sheltered by the mountains and surrounded by tea gardens, Bir (35 km from Palampur), serves as a playground for paragliders and is well known for its Buddhist monasteries and Tibetan handicrafts. It is one of the best aero sport sites in the world and a venue of the world paragliding tournament. Billing is 14 km from Bir and Bir is 15 km from Jogindernagar. With the mountain ranges serving as an amphitheatre, Bir-Billing offers great opportunities for high altitude and cross-country paragliding for a stretch of over 200 km. Private hotels available at Bir and at Jogindernagar.
