Stop 1 Reis Magos Fort and Church

Road trip map

As you drive towards Reis Magos, the towering church building first comes into view. The Reis Magos Church is witness to an important feast on 6th January, the Feast of the Magi. The next major monument is the Reis Magos fortress overlooking the sea. Standing tall across the river from the capital city of Panjim, this fort was one of the first bastions of the Portuguese rulers against enemy invasion. The Reis Magos fort was originally built as a military outpost in 1493 by the Adil Shahi Sultanate of Bijapur. When the Sultanate was defeated by the Portuguese, a fort was constructed in 1551 as the first line of defence for the then capital, Velha Goa.

Stop 2 - End Fort Aguada

Road trip map

Moving along the same route towards Candolim, head towards Fort Aguada. The 17th-century fort and lighthouse in Sinquerim was constructed in 1612. It derived its name perhaps from the presence of the many natural springs inside, ‘Agua’ in Portuguese meaning water. The four-storey lighthouse erected in 1864 is the oldest in Asia and once had 79 cannons. Later this structure was repurposed to be used as a prison.

Apart from the main beach stretch, you can jog towards the end till Dona Paula. It’s pretty relaxing as the crowds diminish as you move away from Miramar. There are another quieter, offbeat beaches of Odxell and Siridao, which are about 15 minutes’ drive from the Miramar Residency.
