Velas Beach is a popular eco-tourism site on Maharashtra's stunning Konkan coast, which is at the beginning of the UNESCO World Heritage Western Ghats. Every year, in the quaint sea-side village of Velas, the beach is host to thousands of Olive Ridley turtles, who come here to lay their eggs. As the sun dips into the sea, setting alight the waters, and darkness descends, watching the turtles start their first journey towards the sea is a fascinating experience. The village hosts an annual Turtle Festival from February to May every year when people come together with conservationists and nature enthusiasts to raise awareness about the presence of turtles in the area. The hatching season lasts from February to April. While large stretches of India's coastline are home to the turtle; Velas Beach is said to be the most popular nesting site on the Konkan coast.
