A hidden gem in the Himalayas, the quaint village of Kanatal is an off-beat tourist stopover. Deriving its name from Kanatal Lake (which does not exist anymore), it has a long list of attractions that offer experiences ranging from temple expeditions to adventure sports. On top of the list is the Tehri Dam, which is considered to be one of the highest dams in the world. The Tehri lake, which is the dam reservoir attracts tourists in flocks for its beautiful and serene surroundings. Another attraction is the Surkhanda Devi Temple, which is one of the 51 shaktipeethas (devotional shrines where the severed body parts of Goddess Sati fell) in the country. It is dedicated to Goddess Surkhanda and is noted for its architecture.

Tourists can also head to the Kodia Jungle, which is teeming with wildlife like barking deer, ghoral, wild boar etc. Pine trees and apple orchards add to the charm of the landscape. Tourists can also visit Shivpuri, about 75 km from Kanatal, to experience the thrill of rafting.
