Located on the outskirts of the port town of Mamallapuram, the Cholamandal Artists Village is a hub of traditional arts and crafts of Tamil Nadu. Tourists can attend various exhibitions that are organised regularly to popularise several art forms through paintings, sculptures, handicrafts, etc. To get a more personal feel of the village, tourists can interact with the artisans that live here and learn more about their respective art and craft forms. Cholamandal is currently India's largest, self-sufficient community of artists. It is a living masterpiece of contemporary art, established by K.C.S Paniker, a painter himself. There is also an open-air theatre in the village called Bharathi where discussions and conferences are held regularly. The Cholamandal Artists Village was established in 1966.
