Mamallapuram is home to the fascinating Guindy National Park, which houses India's first reptile park. The national park is divided into two parts, and while one gate takes you to the Snake Park, another takes you to the Children's Park. Started by Romulus Whitaker, American Indian herpetologist and wildlife conservationist, the Snake Park houses more than 30 different species of snakes. One can also find interesting varieties of other reptiles as well. From half a dozen species of crocodiles and lizards to species of tortoises and turtles, the park offers a lot to tourists and is a must-visit for animal lovers. A small auditorium in the park offers information in English and Tamil about snakes to help tourists understand the reptiles better.
