The Jama Masjid is located at the heart of Leh's bazaar and is said to be the largest mosque in Ladakh region. Standing amidst a bustling market, this tranquil white structure with a gorgeously designed door draws crowds from around the region. It is a stunning double-domed structure with intricate modern carvings and quotes from the Holy Quran painted on the entrance. The mosque houses a memorial- Shahi Hamdan-which is dedicated to Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, a Sufi saint. The mosque currently only allows men to enter the premises. Built sometime during 1666-67 AD, the mosque was a symbol of Mughal friendship with Ladakhi rulers. The original structure of the mosque underwent renovation a few years back.
