Spread over an area of 129.33 hectare, the Koonthakulam Bird Sanctuary is located near Koonthakulam village, around 38 km from Tirunelveli. The bird sanctuary happens to be one of the largest reserves for breeding waterbirds in South India. A sizeable number of migratory birds arrive here in the month of December and remain here till late June or July, before the monsoon sets in. Over 35 species of birds have been flying in and have been vehemently protected by the villagers. These villagers consider the birds as a harbinger of luck. The villagers collect the excreta of these birds in the months of summer, which along with silt is later used as a fertiliser. Some of the popular species to look out for are painted storks and flamingos.
