Manipur's Tamenglong district is blessed with numerous lakes and the most popular one is Zailad Lake. Perched atop a high platform on a hill, the lake attracts tourists with its spectacular beauty and abundant adventure opportunities. Home to pythons, fish, tortoises and a variety of water birds, the lake also invites various migratory birds during the winter season. Thanks to its rich biodiversity, it has also been declared as one of the four wildlife sanctuaries of Manipur. Legend has it that Rongmei Naga spiritual leader and political activist, Haipou Jadonang, got strength and spiritual power to use against the British rulers at the Zailad Lake. Abounding in greenery and natural beauty, this lake is now visited by tourists for relaxing boating sessions. The lake is also popular among adventure enthusiasts as it gives ample opportunities to indulge in different recreational activities like trekking and angling. Zailad lake is located at Makoi near Tamenglong town and makes for a great excursion from Imphal, which lies at a distance of 160 km.
