Built in honour of the Sun god or Bhaskar, the spacious Martand (another name for Sun god) temple complex is one of the most beautiful works of king Lalitaditya, a royal of the Surya dynasty. Built in the 8th century BC, Martand, though now in ruins, boasts unique and exquisite architectural styles with strong Greek influences. This is visible in the use of stone pillars, columns, trefoil doorways and the use of rectangles and triangles and pediments, the latter being a common Baroque design element. The temple is enclosed in a courtyard of columns and arches that must have formed a covered passage all around it. All these merge with Kashmiri Hindu style of architecture to create a stunning structure. Locals say, during its golden period, the temple used to attract visitors from across the world.
