Celebrated in the Kottiyoor Temple, in Kannur, Kerala, this is a 28-day event. Skirted by the hills of Kannur, two temples (Akkara Kottiyoor and Ikkara Kottiyoor) play host to the festivities.
How is it celebrated?
Devotees worship the lingam of Lord Shiva. The deity is placed on a platform composed of stones from the nearby Baveli river. They are called manithara. Devotees perform the rituals in thatched huts and begin with Neyyattam (pouring of ghee or clarified butter). A sword is brought from Muthirerikavu, in Wayanad. Moreover, the priest embraces the lingam in a ritual called Rohini Aaradhana. A tender coconut is offered to the deity according to the ceremony of Elaneer Vayppu. The festivities end with Elaneerattam, in which the tender coconut is poured on the lingam by the head priest.
