Dating as far back as the 8th century, the Vizhinjam rock-cut cave is the smallest of its kind in the country and houses the sculpture of Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi. The cave has a one-celled shrine, where the idol of Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi is kept, along with incomplete relics of Lord Shiva and his divine consort, Goddess Parvati, sculpted on the outer walls.

Given that it is also one of the oldest rock-cut caves in the country and the earliest in South India, Vizhinjam has been under the Archaeological Survey of India since 1965. It remains closed on Mondays, but on the other days, it opens from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and is located about 10 km from the city centre. The cave lies very close to the Kovalam Beach and tourists can club a visit to the two.
