Beacon Highway is one of the highest roads in the world, lying at an altitude of about 5,606 m. It forms an amazing stretch of road from Leh into Nubra Valley and is only open during the months of September and October. The highway is a driver's delight as it passes through a picturesque landscape of craggy mountains and stark foliage and as one travels, they can feel the cool air passing gently through the hair. Such is its remoteness that passing through the highway, one can almost hear the sound of silence.

Foreigners are not allowed to visit this road without a special permit as Nubra Valley lies in a restricted area. For the rest of the year, the road is covered by ice on the northern side of the Nubra Valley.
