ABOUT THE

Attraction

Located on the banks of the Bhima river in Gulbarga district of northern Karnataka, the Buddhist remnants of Sannati (or Sannathi) were discovered by accident. In 1986, when the roof of the Kali temple in the famous Chandralamba temple complex collapsed, it destroyed the idol. However, it revealed four Ashokan edicts on the floor and foundation stone of the temple.

Excavations revealed tablets, sculptures, and other terracotta items and limestone panels from the Maha Stupa or the Adholoka Maha Chaitya (the great stupa of the netherworld). Clay pendants, black polished pottery, Satavahana and pre-Satavahana period coins, ornaments made of copper, ivory and iron, and even a township with paved pathways, houses, and limestone flooring have been discovered here. It is said that probably the only surviving sculptural image of emperor Ashoka was discovered here on a limestone relief.

The nearest prominent city is Gulbarga, about 90 km away.
