ABOUT THE

Attraction

The ancient town of Poompuhar, also known as Kaveripattinam, is located in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. This was a thriving ancient capital port city for the Chola kings, situated at the confluence of River Kaveri and the Bay of Bengal. Excavations here have revealed the ruins of a Buddhist vihara from the 3rd and 4th centuries CE and are similar to that of Nagarjunakonda. An ancient miniature bronze Buddha image from the 5th century CE was also found at the Buddhist temple of Kaveripattinam. Further excavations at the mouth of Kaveri river have also resulted in the discovery of stone structures, pottery pieces belonging to the 4th and 5th century AD, terracotta ring wells, coins from the Chola period and red ware of the medieval period.

Nearest major city is Bengaluru, 100 km away
