ABOUT THE

Attraction

Located in Lakhpat, Gujarat, the Siyot cave complex is said to have been a Buddhist monastery dating back to the 1st century A.D. This spot is believed to be one of the 80 monastic sites that were identified by Chinese travellers in the 7th century. Their main features include an east-facing sanctum and ambulatory. They are also often referred to as the Kateshwar caves.
Scores of tourists visit these five rock-cut caves to marvel at the architecture and inscriptions on the walls that date back to ancient times. Many sculptures and artefacts like Buddhist seals and coins have been found here during excavations. The carvings on the walls of the caves are one-of-a-kind, not found anywhere else in India, adding to the mysterious aura of the complex. Early traces of Brahmi and Devanagari inscriptions found here add to the historical appeal.  The caves are easily accessible from the city of Bhuj, 126 km away.
