ABOUT THE

Attraction

A  group of 62 rock-cut cave shelters on the Sana hill in Gujarat's Amreli district, is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site. Carved out of soft rock and scattered at different levels, the 2nd century BC caves have unique architecture. The most interesting are ornately carved stupas and chaityas, rock-cut pillows and benches. Some of the caves also have a dome and pillared hall. It is believed that these are among the earliest Buddhist caves found in western India. The largest cave, Cave 2, is approximately 21 m in depth and has a width of 18.3 m. The layout of Cave 48 is very different from the rest, as it contains two halls of different dimensions with benches around their perimeter. Frome here, Junagadh is 76 km away.
