ABOUT THE

Attraction

Located close to the backwaters of Kerala’s Alappuzha district is the not-so-known Buddhist site of Karumadi Kuttan. This place is home to a unique idol of Lord Buddha made of solid black granite. It faces the peaceful waters of Lake Punnamada. It’s no wonder, then, that Karumadi Kuttan, when translated into English, means “black boy”. It dates back to the 11th century and thus, stands as testament to the history and influence of Buddhism in the state of Kerala.
Today, the statue is protected by the Kerala Archaeology Department and is included as an important spot in Buddhist pilgrimage itineraries. It is believed that praying to Buddha here can heal illnesses. The idol is broken into half and there are several stories about how that came to be. The statue is ensconced in a white pagoda. The nearest major city is Alappuzha (about 17 km).
