Majestically residing on the highest part of Srinagar, the Hari Parbat Fort echoes many historic events. One of the most significant events in the fort's history was the siege of 1595 when Mughal emperor Akbar's forces attacked the fort, which was held by the local Afghan governor Yusuf Khan. The prolonged siege caused immense suffering to the defenders who were forced to surrender due to hunger and disease. The fort was then occupied by the Mughals for several years. What once was taken by force is now a resident of peace, the fort proudly houses a mosque, a temple, and a gurudwara, which are all symbols of the religious diversity of the region and India at large.
