Bomdila, at a height of 7,273 feet above sea level, is the headquarter of the western Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. One of the most prominent centres of Mahayana Buddhism, the Bomdila monastery (also known as the Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Ling monastery) is a replica of the Tsona Gontse monastery at Tsona, southern Tibet.
Built in 1965 by the 12th incarnation of the Tsona Gontse Rinpoche, it was later rebuilt by the 13th reincarnation, who renovated the monastery by building a larger prayer hall. A Buddha temple and a quarter for the monks are also within the campus. Besides its religious significance, the monastery is also known for its natural beauty.
The nearest major city is Tezpur in Assam, 160 km away.
The monastery, also known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, is believed to be the largest of its kind in India and the second largest in the world.
Dubdi offers mesmerising scenic views. A short trek leads to the monastery and a panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayas.
Lhalung or Tayul gompa is among the oldest Tibetan Buddhism monasteries in Himachal Pradesh.
