PONNUMTHURUTHU ISLAND

Ponnumthuruthu is an island which is situated about 12km south of Varkala.Ponnumthuruthu, the name literally means Golden Island. Legend has it, the queen of the Travancore Royal Family used to hide her cache of gold and ornaments on this island for safety reasons. Hence, it received the name, Ponnumthuruthu. This island is known for the Shiva Parvati temple, which is also called `Thuruthu kshethram’ by the natives. The temple is situated amidst thick coconut groves, which are grown over the entire stretch. Revered as the holiest place on this island it has a history of just 100 years, the temple was in ruins for a long time, but about a decade ago it was rebuilt by the Valiyapurackal family and they own both the island and the temple now. ‘Shivaratri’ is a major festival celebrated at the Siva Parvati temple at Ponnumthuruthu. This lush island is a perfect getaway for those who seek a break away from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
