The Ashoka Pillar

THE NATIONAL EMBLEM OF INDIA

THE ASHOKA PILLAR

It lies close to the Southern gateway of the Great Stupa, and is one of the finest examples of the Ashoka pillars and is known for its aesthetic proportions and exquisite structural balance. It is unfortunate that the complete pillar doesn’t stand now. However, its shaft can be seen at the gateway and the crown of the Ashoka Pillar consisting of four lions that stand back to back, is kept at the museum. The figure of these lions is also the National Emblem of India.
