Porbandar is a coastal city in the state of Gujarat, best known for being the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. The coastal city is also believed to be the birthplace of Sudama, Lord Krishna’s friend and devotee.The city had been a prosperous trading center for centuries, conducting much commerce with Arabian and Persian Gulf countries, as well as East Africa, under the Mughals, the Marathas and the British.  The ancient jetties and ports around the coast are evidence that it was a hub of maritime activities.

The coastal town of Gujarat, Porbandar is located in the Saurashtra Peninsula. Described in Skanda Purana as Sudamapuri and Ashmavati, the city’s most impressive features are the stone buildings with ashlar masonry and the facades of the houses on either side of the streets with carved windows and gateways. The city has many temples and other attractions worth visiting.
