Located on the left bank of Vainganga this small town a cluster of nearly 20 temples, whose architecture resembles that of the Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh. These temples stand as an embodiment of the finest traditions of sculptural and architectural art of the Vidarbha region. Also, the surrounding landscape of small hillocks and the river flowing below have made Markanda a pleasing tourist attraction. Four of the 20 temples viz Markandeya Rishi, Yamadharma, Mrikanda Rishi and Shankara Temple are still well preserved. Of these, the main temple draws the maximum number of devotees as well as tourists and connoisseurs of art. Unlike any of the temples not only in Maharashtra, the exterior of this temple is full of lavishly carved sculptures. It has human sculptures and images of gods and goddesses.
